Welcome to my website...
This site focuses on drawings, paintings and photographic images of historic railroad stations and other historic buildings that I have accumulated since about 1969. While many of my photos and slides have been acquired from other sources, all of the artwork is my own personal work. I have always had an interest in railroads, their equipment and buildings. My father worked for the Missouri-Illinois RR from 1939 to 1976 and, as such, I was exposed to the railroading environment during my youth. I can still recall the many hours spent in the old depot at Bonne Terre waiting for dad's crew to "tie-up" and standing on the depot platform in total awe as the passing locomotives shook the ground and rattled the windows in the telegrapher's bay.
After a stint in the U.S. Navy, I came home to find that the depot in Bonne Terre was in a sad state of repair. In my travels I noticed a similar fate was befalling other small town depots. I set out to photograph as many of these structures as I could, realizing that many would cease to exist in the very near future. Unfortunately, I was not able to photograph many of Missouri's depots before they were torn down. Many of Missouri's stations were torn down prior to 1950; however, I would guess that the real loss of historic small town depots took place between 1960 and 1980.
In 1981, I began coupling my artistic endeavors with my love of railroading. I have done drawings and paintings of locomotives and other rolling stock, but depots have long been my favorite part of the railroad physical plant. Most of the depots I have drawn or painted were demolished or destroyed prior to my birth in 1950. As such, most all have been done from old photographs. While I have done nearly a hundred depots in one medium or another, there remain countless others that I would eventually like to draw. Prints of all my depots are available as are some of the original works, please e-mail me for details. For the time being, enjoy browsing through my site and taking a step back in time to an era when the railroads were the center of activity in many small towns.
