In July 2006, I received much information on the history of the Cooks Station Depot from Joan Beishir, the granddaughter of Thomas E. "Huck" Johnson, the last Station Master of Cooks Station. All of the comments that follow are hers.

My grandfather, Thomas E. "Huck" Johnson, was the Station Master at the Cooks Station depot for many years until his retirement in 1965. When he retired, the depot was closed and they offered to let him buy it. I think it was for a couple of hundred dollars and included all contents and whatever coal was on the railroad siding. The only hitch was that he had to remove everything from the siding.

If I remember correctly, they used mules and logs to gently move the station to behind my grandparents house, where it sat for many years. My grandfather passed away in 1988. Prior to that, they sold the house and the station to my brother, Vernon McKellips, who still lives in Cook Station. The house was made into a B & B.

It is my understanding that when the new owners tried to move the station, it fell apart. I have heard two stories about what happened to it -- one that it was torched and the other that all pieces remain in storage in the event anyone would want to restore it. NOTE: It did collapse while on the truck. They DID keep all parts they could to help them if they ever could restore the Depot. They DID burn all the scrap that couldn't be saved or wouldn't be needed in restoring the depot. (More on next page.)
