| Daviess | Wabash | Still Exists |
| This 1966 photo was contributed by, and the comments below are by Gary Roe. Thanks Gary. Gallatin is on the Wabash 18th District Main Line at Mile Post 250.2. This photo was taken looking northward toward Council Bluffs. Just a few feet behind the photographer, is where the Wabash crossed the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific branch line between Hickory Creek and Saint Joseph at grade. You can see the home signal for this crossing in the right of the photo. Just a short distance further south is where State Highway 6 crosses at grade. Gallatin was somewhat unusual in that the Wabash station is a fair distance from town to the northeast. The Rock Island had their depot further west; but it too was not "in town". This is another one of the asbestos shingled buildings that were built to replace wooden stations. I do not know if this is the reason the new depot was built; but the Grand River flooded pretty badly here at one time, and could have washed the original station away. |
