St. Charles MKT/CBQ Gone

This 1940s photo of the Machens Depot was contributed by Frank Sandy.    Thanks Frank.
The following comments are by Bill Bunch. This was a joint depot/tower of the CB&Q and the MKT. The track on the right behind the tower is the Katy coming in from the west not too far from St. Charles.

NOTE: We Received the following comments from John Machen.  The train shown was a steam excursion run by the Burlington Railroad. This picture shows what was left of the depot at that time. There was an attached freight house and two water towers at that location. My grandparents farm sat between the Burlington and Katy tracks. The picture you have appeared in television ads and other promotional items in the Saint Louis area. The Machens extended family has lived in the area near the tracks since the mid 1800's. As I understand it, the railroad station area was originally called "Texas Junction" after the Katy railroad connected with the Burlington at that location. Sometime early last century, a post office was located near the highway and the area became known as Machens, Missouri and thus the train station was renamed Machens. I am a descendent of the Machens family but I live in Central Illinois. The area where the station used to be is in the process of becoming the end point of the "Katy Trail Park" which runs on the right-of-way of the Katy railroad through the central part of Missouri. The state is in the process of finishing the last part from St. Charles to Machens.
